We don't all have a room we can devote as just our yoga studio. If you do, then can I come to your house? :) Most of us just have a corner of a room & that's great too. As long as you can carve out an area of your own for that "you time".
Having your own space makes your practice a lot easier. It can save you time (driving), money (class fees & gas) & stress (get there on time & all the other drivers on the road!). It also gives you the option of a sort practice at any time, even if it's just a couple of minutes of meditation or Savasana, to set aside the worries & concerns of the day. I can become your safe haven to relax & zen out.
Before you start, think about your favorite yoga studio & all the aspects your love. Then think of ways you might be able to incorporate some of those into your own home studio.
Here are some ideas - some of which are easier to do no matter how big the space. Pick a few you might be able to incorporate then go from there.
The color of the room. Blues & grays are a great calming option.
Mood lighting. Dim the lights, use a lamp (salt lamps are great) or light some candles.
Incense & essential oils. Pick up some incense or candles that can help calm the mood, energize you or whatever you might like. Experiment to find the right combo for you.
Music. Music can enhance your yoga practice or meditation. It can help inspire, relax & unwind. Or you can practice in silence & go within yourself.
Eye pillow. Ok, this is great for everyone, no matter what kind of home studio you have. Put a few drops of lavender on it & OMG, it's practice changing. Start out with a super soft washcloth or hand towel if you don't have an eye pillow.
Wall mirror. They work great to check your form. They can help make you more aware of your form which then can lead to more confidence in your poses. You can even grab one of those kinds that go on the back of your door that are like $10 to start out.
Houseplants. They help create a natural vibe & clean the air. Plants can also bring relaxation & peace of mind to your day. If you don't have a green thumb, you can try succulents or cacti. They still need some water & light but are a little less maintenance. Granted, I managed to kill a cactus before!
Yoga mat. There are lots of good mats available in all price ranges. Try some different ones out & find what works for you. If you have extra mats that you don't like then consider donating them to a women's shelter. Since it's personal preference someone there will love it and be so thankful for it! There's always the option of a towel instead.
Yoga blocks. Blocks are the first prop that I suggest buying (besides a yoga mat of course). You can always use a substitute if you want, though, especially starting out. They're so versatile for all yogis - no matter where they are in your practice.
Any other props you love to use! Check out the prop guide substitution ideas to get you started.
If you have room, you can get some hooks or shelves to hang & sit things on. Another option is a basket or laundry basket. Get a basket that will hold everything & then you can move it around the room when you need to. Or if you want to take your practice outside it's easy to grab & go.
Having a regular yoga practice is beneficial in so many ways. Staying true to your practice helps you flow through all life has in store. Being true to you allows you to make the world a better place!
May you always be true in your intentions, true to your heart's desires & speak loving truth to those around you. Love ya! Jennifer
