Types of Journaling

September 16, 20244 min read

First up… why do we journal?  To find out check out this blog post.

Now, what are some of the ways to journal.  There aren’t any hard & fast rules to journaling.  Experiment & see what works best for you.  Try each one, mix them together.  Make your journaling time work for you.

Here are some popular journaling techniques you can try.

1.      Free Writing: This involves writing continuously without any specific structure or topic in mind. Let your thoughts flow onto the pages without judgment or editing. It can help you tap into your subconscious mind and uncover hidden thoughts and emotions. If you feel stuck you can start writing about not much of anything like what you see or smell to get your thoughts flowing.

2.      Prompts: Use prompts or questions to guide your journaling. These prompts can be specific to certain themes or aspects of your life, such as relationships, gratitude, personal growth, confidence or creativity. They provide a starting point and help you explore specific areas of interest. I offer weekly journal prompts in our Facebook group if you haven’t already joined!

 3.      Gratitude Journaling: In this approach, you focus on expressing gratitude for the things, people, and experiences you appreciate in your life. Write down a few things you are grateful for each day, reflecting on the positive aspects of your life.  Find a Gratitude Journal here to get you started!

4.      Bullet Journaling: Bullet journaling combines elements of a planner, diary, and to-do list. It involves using symbols, bullet points, and short entries to track tasks, events, habits, and goals. It offers a flexible and customizable way to stay organized and reflect on your progress.  Find a planner here that will work great for this kind of journaling.

 5.      Stream of Consciousness: Similar to free writing, stream of consciousness involves writing whatever comes to mind, without censoring or organizing your thoughts. Simply let your thoughts and feelings flow onto the paper, without worrying about coherence or structure. Don’t be concerned if your thoughts are going all over the place – it’s totally normal & what makes it a fun way to journal!

6.      Reflective Journaling: This technique involves reflecting on specific experiences, events, or lessons learned. Write about your observations, insights, and reflections on a particular situation, analyzing the impact it had on you and identifying lessons for the future. I love this kind of journaling during or after my yoga practice.  The practice helps to clear my mind allowing me to reflect more on experiences & events.

 7.      Dream Journaling: Keep a journal by your bedside and write down your dreams as soon as you wake up. Record any vivid details, emotions, or recurring themes. Dream journaling can provide insights into your subconscious mind and help you explore your dreams' meanings.  This isn’t one I use as I typically don’t remember my dreams 😊

8.      Artistic Journaling: Combine writing with artistic expression by incorporating drawings, doodles, or collages into your journal. Use colors, images, and other visual elements to enhance your self-expression and explore your creativity.

9.      Travel Journaling: Document your travel experiences, adventures, and observations in a journal. Describe the places you visit, record your impressions, and include mementos like tickets, postcards, or sketches. Travel journaling helps you preserve memories and reflect on your journeys.  My girls loved this when we went on vacations!  If you’ve never tried it, give it a try.  It’s such a great way to remember the trip.

10.   Digital Journaling: If you prefer using technology, you can opt for digital journaling. There are various journaling apps and software available that allow you to write, add photos, and even sync your entries across devices. Digital journaling offers convenience and easy organization.

Remember – there are no rules in journaling!  Mix & match.  Some days or seasons of your life one way may work better than another.  Don’t get upset with yourself if you feel stuck.  As you slowly begin to relax & let go your journaling practice will evolve & support your journey to finding your true self!

May you always stay true in your intentions, true to your hearts desire & speak loving truth to those around you.

Love ya!
